On 12 December 2007 a new exhibition telling a little-known and =
fascinating
story will open at the National Library of Ireland.

Following the wars at the end of the 16th century, the Irish began to
migrate to continental Europe in a pattern which continued over two =
hundred
years. Some had highly successful careers; others did not.

To tell their story, and celebrate the 400th anniversary of The Flight =
of
the Earls, the National Library has assembled images from museums, =
galleries
and archives all over Europe. Original treasures are also on display, =
among
them the precious original manuscript of Tadhg =D3 Cian=E1in=92s diary =
of The
Flight of the Earls, together with genealogies, coats of arms and some =
of
the earliest Irish language books.

Admission to the exhibition is free of charge.

My understanding is that the clubs as such did not exist before the run-up
to 1989 ut that so some extent they acted as front groups for pre-existing
organisations and that later groups such as SF grew out of them - ie there
is continuity of personnel but not necessarily of organisation.

It featured photographs from the Albert Kahn collection...

'The 50 images featured in the exhibition In search of Ireland, 1913 =
have
been loaned to the National Photographic Archive by the Mus=E9e Albert =
Kahn in
Paris. The images, which represent the first ever colour photographs =
taken
in Ireland, were taken in 1913 by two French women, Marguerite Mespoulet =
and
Madeleine Mignon-Alba, who used newly available autochrome colour =
plates.

The novice photographers recorded life and historic sites on their two =
month
journey through Ireland from Connemara to the Boyne Valley...'

There are some sample photographs on the NLI web site and a web search =
for
Albert Kahn will turn up more. I think that any stage designer will be
excited by THAT red...

As ever, in the English language versions, there is vagueness as to the
placing of the apostrophe - things are much clearer in Spanish.

In 1997, Filipino and other Asian migrant organizations began
celebrating and promoting the 18th December as the International Day
of Solidarity with Migrants. This date was choosen because it was on
18th December 1990 that the UN adopted the International Convention
on the Protection of the Rights of all Migrants Workers and Members
of Their Families.

Building on this initiative, December 18 - with support from Migrant
Rights International and the Steering Committee for the Global
Campaign for Ratification of the International Convention on
Migrants' Rights and many other organizations - began late 1999
campaigning online for the official UN designation of an
International Migrant's Day, which was finally proclaimed on December
4th, 2000.

One point that you might not be aware of is that RT=C9 out-sources a lot =
its material nowadays and therefore doesn't own the copyright. I think =
this policy came in sometime in the 1990s so it should not affect the =
1991 work that you refer to. An example would be the 'Irish Empire' five =
part series on emigration which in spite of a dreadful title contains =
much interesting material (I seem to recall that you are in it?). It was =
made by a small company, Littlebird.=20

I think the page on the RT=C9 website which you need is probably =
http://www.rte.ie/laweb/sales/sales_edu.html.=20

Something else also worth bearing in mind is that some of the most =
creative and innovative programming has been by TG4, not the main RT=C9 =
station, although again it's usually made by a third party.

The ex-President of Ireland, and the ex- United Nations Commissioner for
Human Rights, Mary Robinson, launched a new report by the Immigrants Rights
Unit yesterday. This report, Living in the Shadows: An Exploration of
Irregular Migration in Ireland, reports on the situation of people who are
in Ireland with out documentation.
The report describes people who have permission to legally live and work in
Ireland but who are left without basic documentation.
Siobhan O'Donoghue, The Director of the Immigrants Rights Unit, said that
immigrants didn't decide to left working without documentation.
"If you read this report, it is clear that immigrants don't choose to
operate like this", she said.
"They are left in this state because of certain causes, for example, someon=
e
who has permission to work but whose spouse doesn't have permission to
work."
Talking during the launch yesterday, Iryna Zmyeyevska from the Ukraine,
said that she was left working without permission to work when she was
abused on a mushroom farm.
"I spent three years living without documentation and because of that
without permission to work.
"I wasn't able to return to my native land, my mother was ill and she died
before I had an chance to visit her.
"Without the proper documents, I don't have any rights," she said.
Siobhan O'Donoghue said that there wasn't a simple answer to the question o=
f
irregular immigrants, but if these workers were given a temporary visa, tha=
t
would help them, and that that would be a practical answer to the problem.
"When the government and Minister Lenihan deny temporary visas to
immigrants, they are denying rights to people who haven't done anything
wrong," said Iryna.
While she was launching the report, Mrs Robinson said that immigrants had
rights under international law.
"Immigrants who are working without permission to work, and involved with
irregular work, are some of the people who live under the greatest
disadvantage in this society," said Mrs Robinson.
"It is a cause of pride for us in Ireland that we advance human rights
around the world, and now it is a challenge to us to deal with the problems
of immigrants in our own country who live on the edge of society," she said=

I videotaped 'The Treaty' when it was first shown on TV in England in 1991. I still
have the tape and have used it for teaching purposes. So if you can't get it from
RTE, I might be able to organise, through my university, to have it copied for you.
