I met the news of the passing of the List some time ago and felt much sorrow at it - largely because it was such a fabulous source of information, stimulus and amusement for so long. But I do believe that things pass - especially technologies - and the e-list has been largely trumped by Facebook and other bloggish things. But I equally feel an enormous sense of gratitude and admiration to you for sustaining the list so long and I would not for the world quarrel with your intention to close it. I am retired now - but, hey, I am actually in a new busy teaching career in Brazil spreading the word about Irish studies .... You do still need a Facebook account but can set it to the highest security settings meaning only you can see it. Rather than using the Facebook mobile app, you can download the Groups app through which you can access only the groups you are a member of. The decision was not made lightly and the idea of closing the list first came up several years ago when I assumed control. If you look in the list archives you will see how little traffic there has been and how little of it has been discussion. There has been a clear trend. Communication is changing. We, especially Paddy, are working on preserving the list archives in an accessible way because it has been an important part of the growth of the field. My desire was for an organized end or transition to something else and to preserve what we had built. >> >> As I indicated I would, I looked into Facebook groups and it seems a viable alternative. We can have a closed group that only permits members to post and should eliminate spam and phishing. Posts can include graphics and other things jiscmail has not supported. I think it can be a good successor platform for continued communication. One must join Facebook, but you do not have to be my Facebook friend. (I checked on that.) I am nearly finished setting up a group -- Irish Diaspora Researchers -- I have to finish the summer meeting of a local historical group of which I am president before I have time to finish it and formally release it. >> >> The listserve format was effective for its time and I am quite proud of what IR-D did and what it facilitated.
