Yes, it is sad to see the end of the list. It was a great source for
making contacts within our community back when that was not an easy
thing to do.

I especially enjoyed the discussions - in the early days - when we used
to have so many members engaged in the various topics. But it has been
quite silent for some time.

Best to all,

Carmel McCaffrey

Dear Bill,
This is a pity though it is understandable given how contributions have
fallen off.
It has given me great stimulation over many years.
Thanks to all who participated.
Best wishes,
Patrick

Although these individual offers of thanks will soon (if not already) fill everyone's inbox, I too want to thank Paddy and Bill. I think Kerby may have made the wisest comment in recognizing the archives as a window into the history of contemporary Irish Studies. We can only speculate about the implications, if any, of the closing of that window.

I will miss the list although it has been generally inactive in recent year=

Thanks so much for all that you have done.

With considerable sadness I must inform list members that the list will
cease operation on July 31, 2017. We will continue to post items of interes=
t
to Irish Diaspora Studies as well as information on accessing the list
archives, etc./

After consulting my fellow list owner Anthony McNicholas and list founder
Paddy O'Sullivan this seems the reasonable thing to do. List traffic has
declined dramatically and what traffic we have is largely announcements. I=
t
has been some time since we had a discussion of any length or spirit.
Perhaps out high point was the spirited discussion of Richard Jensen's
article on the lack of discrimination against Irish Americans. More recentl=
y
there was little response to a young (high school) student who published a
piece disproving his thesis and his response. Electronic media has evolved
and listserves are no longer new or innovative. I have noticed many groups
moving to Facebook pages. I see little real, engaged discussion.
Technology moves on.

Over the next few weeks I will share some thoughts on what I think we have
accomplished and welcome other to share. I value the many people I have met
through the list , several of whom invited me to stay in their homes before
they had actually met me. I will always remember hearing people whisper t=
o
the person next to them "that's what he looks like" when I gave some openin=
g
remarks as a substitute at the Ireland Australia conference some years ago
in Cork. The list has been a large part of my life and my career but its da=
y
is over.

I want to remind everyone of the Diaspora conference at UCD next month. I a=
m
sure it will be brilliant. I had very much been looking forward to it - but
we (Murray State) start unusually early this year. I am teaching several
courses that will be heavily first year students and I have learned from
experience not being with them for the beginning poses problems and is hard
to overcome. I will be there in spirit.

To everything there is a season ...

A chara Bill,

While I have been little more than a lurker on the list for the past few
years, it is still with no little sadness that I receive this news. I still
look forward to that IR-D mail header popping up in my inbox even though
the posts have become scarcer in recent times.

So, for what will probably be the last time I post here, I would like to
convey my deep gratitude to both Paddy and Bill for the work they have done
in keeping the list and its subject matter vital and interesting for me
over what must be decades. Through it I have made friends and sustained
relationships that would not have otherwise been possible, I found support
when my work took me into areas which, as the saying goes, were neither
popular or profitable and spirited argument, debate and discussion which
kept me on my toes and prevented me from slipping into complacency (or
sometimes mere sectarian closemindedness). There are people whom I probably
never properly thanked for the information and ideas they shared with me on
the list, and the pleasure I obtained from straying beyond my own
disciplinary boundaries because of their own passion for the innumerable
facets of Irish Diaspora studies.

So as the old clich=C3=A9 has it 'n=C3=AD bheidh a leth=C3=A9id ann aris'

My thanks, affection, and best regards to all IR-D listers past and present

Liam Greenslade

Many thanks to and for the community of scholars that this list has fostered over many years. I signed on as a grad student in the 90s, and the list discussions were as riveting as they were critical for shaping my understanding and appreciation of the larger Irish diasporic world. These discussions have been and will be missed.

cease operation on July 31, 2017. We will continue to post items of interes=

archives, etc./

After consulting my fellow list owner Anthony McNicholas and list founder
Paddy O'Sullivan this seems the reasonable thing to do. List traffic has
declined dramatically and what traffic we have is largely announcements. It
has been some time since we had a discussion of any length or spirit.

I will always remember hearing people whisper to
the person next to them "that's what he looks like" when I gave some openin=
g
remarks as a substitute at the Ireland Australia conference some years ago
in Cork. The list has been a large part of my life and my career but its da=

Thanks for all the work that you, Patrick and Anthony put into the list,
Bill! It was an indispensable help for so many of us studying Irish
migration and ethnicity in the 1990s and the 2000s! The quality of the
posts reflected your dedication to this project!

After consulting my fellow list owner Anthony McNicholas and list founder
Paddy O'Sullivan this seems the reasonable thing to do. List traffic has
declined dramatically and what traffic we have is largely announcements. I=

has been some time since we had a discussion of any length or spirit.
Perhaps out high point was the spirited discussion of Richard Jensen's
article on the lack of discrimination against Irish Americans. More recentl=

there was little response to a young (high school) student who published a
piece disproving his thesis and his response.

I want to remind everyone of the Diaspora conference at UCD next month. I a=

sure it will be brilliant. I had very much been looking forward to it - but
we (Murray State) start unusually early this year. I am teaching several
courses that will be heavily first year students and I have learned from

to overcome. I will be there in spirit.

CFP: Book chapters -- Collection of essays on deathbed scenes in Irish and=
Irish diasporic literature

From the conversion scenes that were a staple of 19th-century didactic fict=
ion, on to Joyce's "The Sisters," Tom Murphy's Bailegangaire, John McGah=
ern's Memoir, and hundreds of other works, deathbed scenes run throughout I=
rish writing. I am seeking critical essays that consider such works, from =
all genres, for an edited collection. Proposals with a comparative or inter=
textual dimension will be of special interest, but essays that examine a si=
ngle work are also very welcome. Please send a proposal of no more than 250=
words to jrogers[at]stthomas.edu by October 1, =
2017. A major Irish Studies publisher has expressed interest, but there is=
no contract yet.
